1. Name of insured must be the owner of record or the transferee.
2. Vehicle identification number on the insurance card must match the VIN# of the vehicle being renewed or transferred.
3. NAIC # must be printed on the proof of insurance card. Commercial policies do not need NAIC number.
Note:
Insurance companies that have registered to do business in Kentucky are required by law to report their book of business on a monthly basis to the Department of Transportation. Thus when you come to the office to renew the registration we do not need to keep a copy of your insurance card. You are required to keep one in your vehicle.
If there has been some change in your coverage/policy, the system will ask us to keep a copy of the insurance card at time of renewal. We always need a new insurance card when you purchase a vehicle. If we need to ask you for an insurance card, it must be dated within the last 45 days.
Example:
If the effective date on the card is over 45 days prior to the day we ask for it in the office, you must get something in writing from your insurance company with a current date on it. It does not matter if the card's expiration date is still in effect. Anyone may purchase insurance on a vehicle and cancel it after they receive their insurance card.
